The Different Cloth Pad Top Fabrics

So for my first post I decided that I would answer a question that as a cloth pad maker/seller I get asked quite a lot:

“What’s the best top fabric for cloth pads?”

I can honestly say that there is no such thing as a “best” top fabric for everyone, simply because everyone is built and shaped differently. However you should be able to get a good idea of what will work for you if you know the pros and cons to each fabric. There are a LOT of different top fabrics available but I will just go over the main ones for you…

Cotton

Cotton is probably the most common top fabric for cloth pads. Its super breathable, thin and comes in lots of cute patterns and prints! Cotton will however stain very easily if you don’t have a good cleaning method in place and is not a good fabric if you have a heavy flow and tend to “gush” quite a lot.

Flannel

Just like the cotton except its slightly softer and has a higher pile to it, still thin though. The downside to flannel is that it doesn’t cope well in hard water area’s and tends to pill quite badly too.

Bamboo Velour

Bamboo velour is a lovely soft natural fabric, its also one of the most sustainable fabrics around with some types growing up to a metre per day! It’s also very breathable, soft (although it does loose its softness over time) and good for gushes as it absorbs quickly. Bamboo is also anti-microbacterial so is quite a good fabric if your prone to infections. The con to bamboo is that it can’t withstand high temperatures so thats something to bear in mind if you use a tumble dryer.

Minky

This fabric is considered the queen of softness! Its made from 100% polyester and has a super soft feel to it, a lot of women love it for postnatal use. Minky is also a stay dry fabric and (perhaps the best thing) stain resistant. the downside to minky is that it can be quite a hot fabric (it personally feels quite sweaty to me) and its also thicker which ultimately means the pad will end up a little thicker too.

As I said before there are  lot of  different top fabrics available and these are just some of them, but it should be enough info to help you get started.

I hope you all enjoyed my first post and please let me know in the comments if there is another type of top fabric you would like to know more about

Bree 🙂
